Open Position
Director, Appraisals
New York, NY · Full-time · On-site
We are looking for an experienced, USPAP-compliant Appraiser to lead valuation work across our advisory and transaction practice. This is a fully in-person role based at our Upper East Side office.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Modern and Contemporary Art, a rigorous approach to fair market value determination, and the ability to operate fluidly in a fast-paced, transaction-oriented environment. We move quickly and expect the same from everyone on the team — this is not a back-office appraisal role.
Responsibilities
Conduct market research and comparable sales analysis across major auction platforms and the private market
Provide FMV analysis and real-time market intelligence in support of active acquisitions, private sales, and consignment strategy
Manage the full appraisal process: research, documentation, valuation files, and supporting records in accordance with USPAP standards and firm protocols
Prepare USPAP-compliant appraisals for estate and gift tax, charitable donation, insurance, equitable distribution, and collateral lending purposes
Liaise with attorneys, accountants, estate planners, and financial advisors as needed in connection with client engagements
Contribute valuation expertise to client-facing materials, pitches, and new business development
Stay current with auction results, dealer pricing, catalogue raisonné updates, and authentication developments relevant to the firm's focus areas
Qualifications
8–10 years of professional appraisal experience with a demonstrated focus on Modern and Contemporary Art
USPAP certification required; AAA or ASA membership strongly preferred
Deep familiarity with the auction ecosystem (Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips) and private market channels
Strong working knowledge of authentication processes and provenance research
Exceptional written and analytical skills — you can produce a clear, well-supported appraisal report and communicate findings directly to sophisticated clients
Ability to move quickly — able to turn around valuations and market analysis on tight timelines without sacrificing rigor
Tech-savvy and comfortable with modern workflows; proficiency with Google Workspace, auction database platforms, and digital documentation tools expected
Highly organized, discreet, and comfortable managing multiple engagements simultaneously
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in art history or related field preferred
